While drilling in 1971, the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of 70 metres. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, Soviet geologists decided to burn it off.hoping the fire would use all the fuel in a matter of days. 40 years later, the gas is still burning, prompting locals to call the cavern “The Door to Hell”.
